The Ashland Residency is seeking experienced individuals interested in joining our team who are able to operate power tools and heavy equipment (chain saws, trimming and chipping machines, dump truck, loader, backhoe, motor grader, tractor w/ attachments) and perform manual labor.
As an Operator Maintenance, you will:
Position available at the Charles City, Oilville (Goochland) and Basie (Henrico) Area Headquarters. Additional positions may be filled from this recruitment within 90 days of the closing date at this and other locations within the Ashland Residency.
VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is the core of this requirement, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.
Starting June 1, 2022, in addition to a comprehensive compensation and benefits package, a $3,000 sign-on bonus is available for qualified candidates. A 12-month tenure agreement is required.

Minimum Qualifications
• knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, and methods
• skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair
• skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools
• ability to perform heavy manual labor
• ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
Additional Considerations
• valid CDL or CDL Learner’s Permit
• experience with roadway maintenance and construction
• experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs
• experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms and accident clean-up.

If selected as a finalist, you will perform a skills demonstration; undergo references and verification of work history, DMV Records Check, Pre-employment physical and drug screen, and Fingerprint-based criminal history records check. This position also requires approved safety shoes as a reimbursable expense. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. H1B VISA Sponsorship is not available.
NOTE: All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL from a Class A to a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
