Job Duties
VDOT's Edinburg Residency is seeking a highly motivated Sign Crew Leader to plan, schedule, oversee and perform the installation, maintenance, repair and removal of roadway signs and traffic control devices for Residency area to include program, budget and inventory oversight. As the qualified candidate, you will perform the following duties:
• Records Preparation and Management - Prepare and maintain program and project documentation. Assist in the preparation of budget reports, data and records
• Leadership - Conduct on-the-job training and recommend additional training needs to Area Headquarters Superintendent
• Preventative Maintenance - Lead or perform maintenance repair, replacement, & preventative maintenance
• Traffic Signs - Install and remove traffic signs and other warning devices
• Provide Leadership in Traffic Control - Work with supervisors and managers at assigned locations to plan, schedule, oversee and perform the placement, maintenance and removal of traffic control devices for work zones, detours, lane closures, etc., according to the MUTCD
• Provide Leadership in Sign Installation, Maintenance, & Repair - Plan, schedule, oversee and perform new sign installation, repair or replacement of damaged signs, and removal of signs from roadways
Minimum Qualifications
• Ability to compile data, prepare reports and maintain records.
• Experience in work zone set-up, traffic controls and flagging to include using the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) or similar regulations.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Valid driver's license.
• Ability to oversee the work of others.
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, heavy duty equipment used in routine and emergency maintenance operations.
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
• Safety shoes required.
• Experience in sign installation, maintenance and repair.
Additional Considerations
• Experience managing inventory.
• Experience in emergency operations, e.g. snow, ice, storms, accidents, etc.
• Experience in roadway sign installation, maintenance and repair.

As defined by VDOT Department Memorandum (DM) Number: 17-1 – Emergency Operations and Traffic Management, VDOT is an emergency operation agency. As such, this job is essential to emergency response operations and expected to work in these situations. Report to work when called. Maintain communications with supervisor. Keep abreast of weather forecasts for duty readiness in reporting. Be prepared to operate appropriate equipment in all kinds of weather.
NOTE: All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL from a Class A to a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
