SUMMARY
Mortenson is currently seeking a Power Studies Design Engineer III – with experience in building power system models in PSSE, PSCAD and/or ETAP and performing studies including short circuit, reactive power, losses, arc flash, Transient Over Voltage (TOV) or Harmonics. The role would be helping to study and design the latest utility scale Wind, Solar and Storage generation facilities and their interconnection to the grid.
The studies group collaboratively supports phasor domain and time domain simulations. Phasor domain simulations - power flow/reactive power compensation, short circuit, and energy loss using the software PSSE. Time domain simulations TOV and Harmonics using the software PSCAD. The emphasis for this role would be on time domain simulations but the engineer is expected to fill in for phasor domain simulations, using PSSE, when needed. A big plus is having experience in dynamic simulations, such as PRC-024 and MOD-026, using PSSE. Another area that is needed is arc flash analysis experience, applying NFPA 70E using ETAP.

The base compensation range for this role in Denver, CO is $110,000 - $128,000. (Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL – 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR – 10, Washington, D.C. – 12.5%).
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Minimum 5+ years in the electrical power industry
- Minimum 2+ years of related work experience in power system studies including time domain simulations
- Responsible for working closely with other engineering and design team members to coordinate the overall design package and requirements
- Evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria by using judgment in making adaptations and modifications and providing interpretations and conclusions with support from other Engineers
- Interface and present to multiple stakeholders (e.g. customer decision-makers, project teams, etc.)
- Perform data analysis and basic engineering calculations required for designs from low voltage through 500 kV substations.
- Assist with the review and approval of equipment vendor drawings and test reports on equipment from manufacturers with Lead Engineer's review and approval
- Provide engineering support for proposals, estimating, procurement, and construction
- Conduct project detailed designs aligned with our customer requirements and Mortenson’s best practice standards
- Coordinate with other engineering disciplines and Design Phase Managers to successfully deliver design projects
- Verify that construction agrees with electrical engineering design drawings, including field coordination and potential site visits
- Assist in the development and evaluation of the technical requirements for fabrication and construction tender packages
- Assist in researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations
- Assist field personnel in resolving unanticipated site conditions
- Experienced in electrical power engineering theories and principles.

- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to travel up to 10%.
EDUCATION:
- Graduate of a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or related Engineering program. Strongly preferred degree is from a school of engineering with accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum.
- Master’s and PHD degrees in Electrical Engineering would also be considered
- Professional Engineering (PE) certification or achievement of PE within 6 months of entering this role.
