Job Duties
VDOT's Staunton District Traffic Engineering Maintenance section is seeking a highly qualified Traffic Supervisor to lead and support system operations by effectively participating in the maintenance and installation of pavement markings and pavement messages. As the qualified candidate you will be responsible for:
• Communication - Effectively communicate with citizens, public officials, state employees and business people demonstrating sensitivity for their opinions and suggestions.
• Vehicle and Equipment Operations & Preventive Maintenance - Demonstrate considerable skill in the operation and maintenance of vehicles and equipment (light, medium and heavy duty) to perform roadway maintenance and construction activities.
• Records Preparation & Management - Prepare and maintain program and project documentation.
• Emergency Operations - Supervise emergency operations to ensure the safe operation of roadways.
• Safety - Identify proper work site protection techniques. Ensure workplace safety by identifying hazards and making suggestions for improvement.
• Provide Leadership in Traffic Control Devices - Work with supervisors and managers at assigned locations to plan, schedule, supervise and perform the placement, maintenance and removal of traffic control devices for work zones, detours, lane closures, etc., according to the MUTCD
• Leadership - Assist the Area Superintendent in planning for the maintenance program, special projects, and personnel needs.
• Supervision - Schedule and direct the activities of personnel and equipment in a safe and efficient manner to accomplish planned and assigned work within established timeframes.
Minimum Qualifications
• Ability to obtain valid CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
• Knowledge of sign installation standards and material characteristics.
• Valid driver's license.
• Ability to supervise others and provide technical direction and guidance to skilled, semi- skilled and manual laborers.
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
• Skill in the installation and maintenance of roadway signs (both metal and wood structures).
• Safety shoes required.
• Skill in the operation, maintenance, methods, procedures of specialized pavement marking equipment and materials.
• Ability to communicate effectively with customers.
• Skill in the installation of pavement messages and markings (thermo plastic and painted).
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand held and power tools and light, medium and heavy duty equipment used for district operations.
Additional Considerations
• Experience in pavement marking, stripping and messaging operations.
• Flagger's Certification
• Ability to plan work schedules and identify and assign manpower, materials and equipment needed to accomplish the job.
• Ability to complete reports and records, requiring business English and math.
