Job Duties


VDOT Northern Region Operations Traffic Engineering Section is seeking a qualified individual to provide Traffic Engineering support and guardrail activity oversight.

More specific focus duties entail:

Provide technical assistance for guardrail In-Service Performance Evaluations (IPSE).
Provides coordination for unusual, non-standard guardrail designs that need to be escalated or coordinated with special design team in CO L&D or additional District technical stakeholders (such as S&B, IMO, TFO, etc.).
Review guardrail HITS with long replacement timelines to improve processes and reduce overall schedule for unusual, specialty replacement guardrail HITS.
QAs MASH design packages (designed by CO TOD consultant, approved locally).
In consultation with CO TOD, identify candidate locations for MASH upgrades in order to increase the number of MASH upgrades delivered in NOVA.
Identify and coordinate future safety projects to provide shoulder widening, clear zone improvements, or others to eliminate hazards that are currently protected by guardrail.

Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons:
Track the planned inventory and locations of upcoming RRFBs installations through Northern Virginia, including maintenance ownership of VDOT vs. locality, and installation dates.
Coordinate trouble calls, repairs and replacement of locality-maintained existing RRFB devices.
For all RRFBs under development and proposed to be locality-maintained, coordinate design review, inspections, and acceptance with the locality.


Responsibilities to include but may not be limited to:

Teamwork and Customer Service- Demonstrates customer service and work habits that reflect the VDOT Values and coordinates the flow of information both orally and in writing.

Systems Operations Improvement- Assist in the identification and development of projects to improve transportation system operations, safety, and capacity. Proactively identify transportation improvement projects during study efforts. Coordinate project identification efforts.

Analysis and Technical Reporting- Analyze and interpret engineering data and information. Prepare complete, clear and concise reports and recommendations.

Manage Assigned Activities- Plan, schedule and coordinate engineering program activities such that deliverables are met within the established scope and timeline.

Special Assignments- Manage special program initiatives and projects as assigned. Serve and represent VDOT or assigned program area on various committees and work groups.

Engineering Process Management- Use established VDOT policies and procedures in the development and delivery of engineering projects. Engineering projects are completed in compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.

Communication- Establish an effective line of communication between VDOT, contractors, government agencies and the public. Investigate issues and resolve complaints.

Project Engineering- Assist in the management of projects and tasks including development of and managing the scope, schedule, budget, deliverables, change management, quality, and status reports. Complete multiple concurrent tasks and assignments, and report updates on their status.

Conduct Traffic Engineering Studies- Conduct complex traffic signal studies and modifications, roadway and pedestrian safety and capacity analyses, speed studies, and other special studies are conducted appropriately in accordance with traffic engineering principles.


Minimum Qualifications


• Experience designing plans for traffic control devices, incorporating traffic engineering requirements into roadway plans and making recommendations for plan changes.

• Experience in conducting traffic engineering studies involving traffic operations, traffic control devices, and roadway and pedestrian safety and capacity issues.

• Experience collecting and analyzing traffic related data.

• Considerable experience gathering data, developing recommendations and making presentations.

• Extensive knowledge of traffic engineering principles, practices and standards.

• Skilled in the use of computers and software applications to include traffic engineering and design software such as CADD, MicroStation, Highway Capacity Software, Synchro, CORSIM, SYDRA, e


Additional Considerations


A combination of training, experience, or education in Civil Engineering or related field desired.
Versatility to work under minimum supervision or direction on multiple projects, with varying delivery dates, and for multiple stakeholders.
Virginia Professional Engineer license is preferred.
Experience with guardrail and rectangular flashing beacon design
